HP server causes of failure

The most common cause of failure in an HP ProLiant server is the failure of several SAS hard drives or SATA hard drives or with older models of the SCSI hard drives (LVD). An aborted rebuild subsequently means that the RAID network can no longer be accessed. This is a common problem especially with older HP ProLiant servers, since a single read error on one of the other hard drives is sufficient to abort the rebuild process. Defective RAID controllers can also be a reason for failure. The typical error messages in this context are "RAID offline", "RAID critical", "MISSING", "FAILED" or "Logical drive (s) disabled".

Mind the following steps with your defective HP ProLiant server:

  • Do not restart the server.  Restarting the server can trigger an automatic rebuild, which can overwrite critical data.
  • Turn off the HP server and don't apply power to it anymore.
  • Label every hard drive in the RAID system with their position (slot number).
  • Addionally mark the defective hard drive(s).
  • Provide the HP ProLiant server model (e.g. HP ProLiant BL490c G6 or HP ProLiant DL380 G7, tower or 19" rack system).
  • Provide the exact RAID controller model (e.g. Compaq Smart Array 431 or HP Smart Array E200)
  • Do not open the hard dis(s)! This can cause additional damage and may complicate the data recovery.
  • Provide the RAID level used (RAID 0, RAID 1, RAID 5, RAID 6, JBOD)
  • Don't install or save anything on the system. This can overwrite critical data.
