electronical damage after overvoltage

Physical damage

Voltage spikes in hard disks, for instance caused by a power failure, use of the incorrect power supply or even a lightning strike, usually cause damage in the area of the electronics (PCB – printed circuit board) and will often affect several components.

Logical damage

Similarly, file system errors can occur, when this happens during operation. In the worst case, a voltage spike can even penetrate into the interior of the hard disk, causing defects of the write/read heads or to the electronic components within the hard disk, such as the preamplifiers of the write/read heads.

Problem of replacing the PCB

In cases with damaged electronics, attempts are often made to replace the defective PCB with a model with the identical construction. We strictly advise against this! Specific parameters are located on the PCB as well as the magnetic disks, which are useless with a different hard disk and on the contrary will make work even more difficult, because the technicians must first reset the parameters again.

Attingo has special software that has been developed in-house and the knowledge to successfully reconstruct the data from storage media with electronic damage.
