Common causes for I/O device errors
If Windows reports an I/O (input/output) device error , this means that the data carrier (hard drive, SSD, memory card, USB stick, CD/DVD) has malfunctions during the reading and/or writing access. I/O errors occur during the ongoing operating, while you work on a file or run a program.
The most common causes are:
- defective sectors (bad blocks)
- damaged write/read heads
- faulty modules in the service area
- File system error (under Linux)
- damaged data cable
- SATA or USB interface is damaged
