Reasons for data loss due to hardware errors

  • Drop, impact: Head-crash

    When a hard disk is dropped or experiences an impact, either during operation or when turned off, this will often cause defective write/read heads and/or damage to the surface of the magnetic disks.
  • Seized bearing or defective motor

    When a hard disk no longer “spins up”, this is often due to a seized bearing. A defect of the motor is very rare.
  • Overvoltage or short-circuit (PCB)

    When voltage fluctuations occur due to incorrect power supplies or power failures, this often results in defects in the hard disk electronics (PCB).
  • Firmware errors in the control code

    Erroneous software is a rather common reason for the required data rescue. Due to the fact that the construction and control of hard disks is incredibly complex, this is an error source that should not be disregarded.
  • Material fatigue

    Particularly old or very frequently used hard disks will have wear, as a result of which they are more susceptible to defects of the mechanical components.
  • Magnetizing effect

    Particularly strong magnets are required in order to create a magnetic field with a large damaging effect. These types of magnets are usually not available on the market. However, caution is required when hard disks are in operation.
  • Environmental influences

    Hard disks are also not safe from thunderstorms and fire. A quick response is required in the case of a burned or wet hard disk to ensure that the damage is not increased even further. It is also very important to take into account that damp or wet hard disks may NOT be dried (may that be with towels, a hair dryer or similar), but instead should ideally be wrapped in a slightly moist towel and immediately brought to us. Controlled drying may only be performed in a clean room by technicians.

As a rule, hardware damage is exacerbated by repeated start attempts of the storage medium. In traditional HDD hard disks, the write/read heads float just a few dozen nanometres above the rotating magnetic disks, which spin with speeds of up to 250 rotations per second.

When the write/read heads touch the magnetic layer of the surface, minute particles are removed from both the surfaces as well as from the write/read heads and due to the centrifugal force, these are distributed in the entire housing. As a result, the probability increases exponentially that the write/read heads will come across such a particle again and cause further damage. In the worst case, depending on the model, the entire magnetic layer can be removed in just a few minutes or hours.

The speed of the removal depends on the type of carrier material. Glass is highly suitable for high rotational speeds. For this reason, these types of hard disks are often used in servers or notebooks. However, this also means that in the case of a defect of the write/read heads, destroyed surfaces occur more quickly. Contrary to this, there are carrier surfaces made of aluminium, which are somewhat slower as their rotational speeds are lower.
