Being packed right = being sent right

The correct way of packing warrants the safe transportation of your data media.
If packed in a professional manner, your data media should not suffer further damage during transportation. It takes 4 careful steps, when packing your hard disk for transportation.
Andreas Mortensen, Sales

Packing of data media

01.   Antistatic shielding

Hard disks should be prevented from any unwanted electrical discharge. A highshield static shielding should be used to prevent local parts of the data medium from gathering static electronical voltage.

Tip: In case you don't have anything else you can wrap a hard disk in case of emergency (!) in a piece of newspaper. Do not use styrofoam or similar material, because these may load themselves with static electricity.

02.   Foam rubber prevents gliding

The data medium should be packed in foam rubber to prevent it from gliding. Please take care, that the data medium cannot move from its place during transportation.

03.   Box with filling materials

Position the packed data medium in another box. This box should leave at least 3 cm space around it. The left space you should fill with filling materials so that the package cannot move from its place.

04.   Addressing & Transportation

Do not forget to write receiver and sender on the box. A client number as well as a phonenumber may also increase the speed of the data rescue operation.

Packed in this way the data medium has only to be send to us and we'll succeed in rescuing its data. Please do inform yourself on the transport timetable to check when your data medium will arrive at us.

Examples of data media carelessly packed for transportation

Not without antistatic shielding

Not without enough filling

The data medium is not packed antistatic. The filling can not sufficiently mitigate damage in transit from normal shock.

mangelnde Verpackung, kein Polster, nicht antistatisch

carelessly packed, no filling, not antistatic

Not without filling materials

The hard disks are put in the box next to each other, without any filling materials in the space left in-between. During transportation the hard disks will collide and this may result in more loss of data. Failing here is individual packaging which prevents each data medium from banging against each other during transportation.

Not without filling materials

The data medium lies completely free in the box and will be thrown around at every movement of the box. Write-Readheads can get out of their position when they catch speed (eg. when the package drops down or is being thrown) and this may cause a crash.
