Data rescuers warn for defects in Seagate hard disks
The symptoms are as much typical as disturbing: upon starting the data medium is
not recognised anymore by the computer, or in many cases it is told to have a
capacity of 0 MB. After that, the hard disk does not communicate anymore, the user cannot get access to his data. In case you have this alarming experience with specific data media of
Seagate or
Maxtor, you can be sure you're not the only one.
“
It has started already a year ago with a couple of demands for help. At the moment we have in Austria and Germany more than one hundred cases a week”, says Nicolas Ehrschwendner, manager of Attingo Data Rescue, a specialist in data reconstruction with clean room laboratories in Vienna, Hamburg and Amsterdam. According to analysis of engineers at Attingo the central problem is a defect in the firmware of the hard disk. When asked, Seagate admits this. Firmware is the software implemented in the disk, which takes care of the operating of the hard disk.
“
As far as we know today, the faulty models are specific models in the series Seagate 7200.11, Seagate SV35.3, Seagate SV35.4, Seagate ES.2 SATA as well as Maxtor DiamondMax 22”, Ehrschwendner explains. A list of these models is permanently online in
www.attingo.com. According to Ehrschwendner it is alarming that it ought to be reckoned with that the defect may occur sooner or later, as long as one does not update - also in those hard disks that do not until now show any symptom.
The good news
Attingo can
repair the defect firmware and
reconstruct all data still physically present. Furthermore Attingo actualises – in as far as present – the firmware in a non-faultive version, so that the data medium can be used again.
Our tip
Attingo advises all users to verify if they have data media of the faulted models and in case they do, to make the arrangements needed.
